Things to Do in Kelowna

Set among a stunning range of mountain, orchards, vineyards, and lakes, Kelowna is an idyllic place to live and study. The largest city in the Okanagan Valley, Kelowna is located in the Sonora Desert, which means it has warm summers and short, mild winters.

Kelowna has abundant parkland and green spaces and several pristine beaches and lakes, which offer endless opportunities for outdoor fun and activities. Kelowna is close to multiple large provincial parks, including Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park which is an ideal location for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, or backcountry skiing. There are plenty of urban parks in Kelowna, too. Cedar Creek Park, Guisachan Heritage Park and Knox Mountain Park are all fabulous places to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Kelowna is situated on Lake Okanagan, which is more than 100KM long, and is in the vicinity of several hundred other lakes. From lazy afternoons on the beach, to active days spent jet skiing, power boating, or kayaking, there's endless fun to be had at Kelowna's lakes and beaches. Kelowna is also renowned for its plentiful orchards and vineyards, which surround the city centre. You can take a personal tour or enjoy one of Kelowna's many annual food and wine festivals.

In the winter, Kelowna is well-located for ski and snowboarding enthusiasts. The nearby Monashee Mountains are great for skiers and boarders of all levels and the city is near several ski resorts, including Big White, Silverstar, Apex and Crystal Mountain. Snowmobilers and cross-country skiers will also enjoy getting out into the wilderness that surrounds Kelowna.

There's plenty of indoor fun to be had in Kelowna, too. Downtown Kelowna has many art galleries, theatres, museums and fabulous restaurants. The Mary Irwin Theatre and the Kelowna Community Theater are both great places to take in some exceptional theatre productions.

Sports lovers have plenty of options when it comes to local teams. The Kelowna Rockets are the local Western Hockey League team and are winners of the 2004 Memorial Cup. The Kelowna Falcons play at Elks Stadium from May through August and are the only Canadian baseball team in the Pacific International League. You can also check out the Okanagan Sun, who play in the Canadian Junior Football League.

Kelowna has a rich and fascinating history and many important historical buildings to show for it. The Father Pandosy Mission is a four-acre farm that features historical buildings dating back to the 1860s. Guisachan Heritage Park was once owned by the Earl and Countess of Aberdeen who bought the land in 1890. Now you can tour the gardens, eat at the Guisachan House Restaurant or attend one of the many special events held on the grounds.
