Technology Improving How Pharmacies Operate

Thursday, January 5, 2012

Students training to become pharmacy assistants at Vancouver Career College may soon find themselves using new technologies showcased at the 46th American Society for Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition in New Orleans.

Pyxis introduced a new medication dispensing system could enable hospital pharmacies to more effectively manage patient medications on both a small and large scale. Rowa Technologies demonstrated a high-speed storage and retrieval system that allows pharmacies to improve workflows within the dispensary. Other technological advancements on display at the event, included scanning and inventory management software, and new order review tracking software.

"The needs of hospital pharmacies continue to evolve, and more than ever, technology solutions must help increase safety and lower operating costs," Tom Leonard, president of Medical Systems at CareFusion, said in a statement.

In a recent study, the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities wrote that expanding the skills and responsibilities of today's pharmacy technicians will play a pivotal role in defining the future of the Canadian healthcare system. The report also said that enhancing pharmacy technician practice in areas such as automated dispensing will protect the safety, security and integrity of medication dispensing systems and patient information.

As Canada's healthcare system develops, there will be a growing need not only for pharmacy technicians, but also for qualified pharmacy assistants. At Vancouver Career College, students can develop their skills and advance their careers through healthcare training to position themselves in this rapidly growing field.
