More Nurses Still Needed in Canada

Friday, February 3, 2012

The number of nurses in Canada has increased according to a study by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Although the country has witnessed a slight growth of in nursing, the study also shows that the ratio of nurses to Canadians is still lower than it was two decades ago.

"If we look back in time to the mid-90s there were cuts in healthcare budgets across Canada. At that time, there was a reduction of nurses and other healthcare professionals," stated CIHI manager of health human resources, Carole Brule, to the Montreal Gazette. "Despite the reinvestments that have been made in the past 10 years, we're still not at the ratio...that we had in the early '90s."

By increasing full-time opportunities in the healthcare field, the nation could ultimately witness a fairer balance between the number of nurses and the overall population.

While these increases are promising signs for the future of Canadian healthcare, the numbers are still not where experts wish it to be.

Those looking to pursue a career as a practical nurse can join others in a field that has continued to grow over the past five years. Enrolling in the Practical Nursing program at Vancouver Career College can help prepare them for jobs at long-term care homes and other healthcare facilities.
