Volunteer in Kelowna While Taking Practical Nursing

Monday, October 29, 2012

For some students, finding a way to satisfy their compassionate side can make a world of a difference in their professional lives. Fortunately, in some fields such as practical nursing, people get to fulfill this need with each day that they report to work. However, some aspiring professionals need more than their careers to feel a sense of purpose. Kelowna students have a wealth of opportunities to make these dreams a reality, particularly through Kelowna Community Resources.

The centre provides workshops, volunteer opportunities, seminars and other resources for those in search of the right volunteer programs, whether they are looking for providing assistance at sporting events, church organizations, youth centres or literacy programs for kids. They even host a number of fairs that allow residents of Okanagan Valley to check out which nonprofit organizations are located within close proximity to their homes.

Some young adults find workshops highly valuable, such as the Overview of Volunteer Management workshop, which allows aspiring professionals a chance to explore the idea of taking on a more administrative and authoritative role in volunteer work. While they can still provide help and support to the community in this type of role, they are also responsible for a group of volunteers at whatever event or program they choose to work.

Deborah Klassen is a former participant of this community workshop, and prior to it, had never worked with volunteers as closely, according to Kelowna Capital News.

"It was a great equipping tool that put all of the basics at my fingertips," Klassen told the news source. After the workshop, she became the community liaison and volunteer coordinator for the Karis Support Society. "I found networking with other volunteer managers so beneficial because their experiences helped to prepare me for what was ahead."

This type of experience, alongside a young adult's education to become a practical nurse, is a strong addition to any resume. Students can learn how to manage a team and engage with peers, as well as juggle other important responsibilities such as budgets and daily schedules for each day of volunteering.

This particular workshop will take place in Kelowna on October 29 and 30, as well as November 5 and 6, and is open to anyone interested in community service.

Students who are considering enrolling in practical nursing courses at Vancouver Career College can take advantage of this opportunity and positively contribute to the community. For more information on the program, fill out the form on the right.
