Fraser Valley Health Centres Expand Beds

Friday, February 8, 2013

Health centres in the Fraser Valley are working to improve their facilities, whether by expanding their staff or increasing the number of beds. No matter how they do it, the increase is a positive sign for those looking for jobs in the healthcare industry.

The local health authority would like to add 427 beds in Surrey, the Tri-Cities and White Rock to accommodate a quickly growing population, especially among seniors. The request would also cover 24 beds for adults, aged 19 or older, living with substance abuse or persistent mental health issues.

"Individuals with mental health and substance use issues often have complex care needs and cannot safely live on their own or with their families," Andy Libbiter, a mental health and substance abuse executive director in British Columbia, told CBC News.

Many of these centres hope to find candidates to add to their roster who already have some experience under their belts, such as a practicum placement through specific healthcare training programs. By making strong connections and getting accustomed to the field, these students help themselves become trustworthy professionals for future jobs.

Students who are interested in addiction and community services worker careers can enroll in healthcare courses at Vancouver Career College. For more information, fill out the form on the right.
