Mental Health Standards Carry Over Into the Workplace

Friday, March 15, 2013

A new national health standard is set for implementation across Canada. With an updated list of guidelines outlined in "Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace," workplace practices with regard to mental health should be improving in the coming months.

According to Global News, the document highlights ways to identify and address certain risks while also creating a positive mental health environment. Many employers are supporting this movement in an effort to improve the quality of the workforce while also cutting down on medical costs that impact the Canadian economy each year, Benefits Canada reports. About 30 per cent of disability claims are related to mental health issues, so addressing the problem early on could improve many companies in the long run.

"The business case is clear: a work environment that promotes good mental health is socially responsible, cost effective and helps attract and keep good employees," the report states, as quoted by Global News.

While the change may help to identify and approach mental health issues, the treatment of these problems is still left to professionals. Those who are interested in finding a role as an addictions and community services worker can first enroll in courses healthcare courses at Vancouver Career College.
