Three hands-on training programs prepare students for rewarding careers in less than a year

Abbotsford, BC – October 10, 2013 – Social service workers play an important role throughout the province. As frontline workers, these professionals help people facing a range of issues including poverty, addiction and mental illness. The ability to empathize, connect and communicate with others is essential for the job. So is the right training.

Vancouver Career College will host an Info Session in Abbotsford on October 17, 2013, showcasing the options open to those looking to train for a career in the social services field. The event will take place from 2:00-3:00pm, with check-in at 1:45pm sharp.

Guests will learn about three Social Services Worker programs available at Vancouver Career College. The 29-week Social Services Worker Foundations program covers the fundamentals of social service work. Students learn about a range of social issues, psychology, working with families, case management and professional communications. Other topics include burnout and self-care for professionals, community resources and professional development.

Students can build on their education from the Social Services Worker Foundations and specialize in two key areas. The Social Services Worker Recovery Specialist program explores addiction and its impact on families and communities. Students learn about pharmacology, assessment, treatment planning and relapse prevention. Group work and youth issues are covered as well in this 44-week program.

The Social Services Worker Youth Specialist program is also 44-weeks long and trains students to work with at-risk youth. Courses cover youth culture, diversity, advocacy, youth empowerment and a range of youth-specific issues such as violence, gangs and incarceration. Students also learn about the impact of addiction on the lives of youth.

At the Info Session on October 17th, guests will have a chance to hear from instructors about career opportunities in the community at mental health facilities, schools, family social service agencies and group homes. They’ll also discuss the ins and outs of each of program and how students will benefit from the hands-on experience gained from practicum placements in social service agencies and similar environments.
