The Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate program is 36 weeks in length and offered in person at the Surrey campus. You’ll train in fully equipped classrooms and laboratories designed to simulate real healthcare environments, combining theory with hands-on practice.

Graduates are prepared to pursue a variety of entry-level roles in clinical and diagnostic settings, including:

  • Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • Laboratory Technician
  • Phlebotomist
  • Clinical Assistant
  • Specimen Processor

Employment opportunities exist in hospitals, public health laboratories, private diagnostic testing facilities, physician’s offices, and quality control labs.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Proof of high school graduation or equivalent (GED or BC Adult Basic Education), or mature student status (19 years of age or older)
  • Passing score of 50% on the College’s General Math Exam
  • Keyboarding speed of 40 words per minute
  • Proof of English language proficiency (per the College’s English Language Proficiency Policy)
  • Interview with the campus director, program coordinator, or designate

Note: International transcripts must be verified by WES or ICES.

Yes! You’ll gain real-world experience during a six-week practicum placement in a clinical laboratory before graduation. During your practicum, you’ll practice skills such as specimen collection, urine and glucose analysis, and diagnostic testing—helping you build confidence and job readiness in a professional healthcare setting.
