Since December 1994, massage therapy is a designated health profession under the Health Professions Act in BC but it has been regulated profession in the province since 1946.
Typically, Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are licensed by a provincial governing body and receive up to 3,000 hours of education in orthopaedic and physiologic health sciences. After a rigorous training program, including hands-on learning in the classroom and the completion of a provincial registration exam, RMTs are ready to take on their first clients and practice massage therapy.
While a variety of treatments can be used for certain symptoms, the most common form of massage, which involves the kneading and rubbing of muscles and soft tissue. Soft tissue manipulation is the foundation of massage therapy.
More advanced methods treat particular injuries or feelings of pain, such as neuromuscular facilitation, myofascial release therapy or joint mobilization. Whether a client is feeling pain in their spine, joints or certain trigger points, RMTs can use their skills to address these issues.
