Vancouver Career College Launches Re-Vamped Practical Nursing Program in Kelowna

Thursday, August 9, 2012

New curriculum prepares graduates for rewarding career in BC’s healthcare sector.

Kelowna, BC – August 9, 2012 – Vancouver Career College is launching their revitalized Practical Nursing program in Kelowna. Focusing on the art and science of nursing, as well as the relevant laboratory and clinical experience, the revamped program will provide students with numerous opportunities to develop, integrate and demonstrate the knowledge and competencies they need to confidently enter this in-demand healthcare field.

“The re-vamped curriculum will continue to prepare grads to meet the demand for practical nurses in British Columbia,” says Larry Heinzlmeir, VP of Marketing for Vancouver Career College. “As we see more healthcare professionals approaching retirement, our Practical Nursing grads will be ready to take on those roles.”

Along with exploring the evolution of practical nursing in the Canadian healthcare system, students will learn about the roles practical nurses play in residential care settings and in the community. They’ll learn how to manage and prevent disease and illness as well as promote good health across the lifespan. In addition, they’ll study some of the challenges encountered in the healthcare field today, including mental illness, developmental disabilities, acute conditions and aging.

Students will also hone and incorporate their skills and knowledge through hands-on experiences in the classroom, lab and clinical placements.

As a regulated profession, practical nurses must operate within a provincially-established scope of practice and code of ethics. The curriculum of Vancouver Career College’s Practical Nursing program prepares students to meet the competencies and standards established by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia (CLPNBC), the regulatory authority for licensed practical nurses in the province.

Practical nurses are an important part of the healthcare sector and often working collaboratively with or under the direct supervision of other healthcare professionals, including registered nurses and physicians. Graduates will be prepared for positions in a range of healthcare settings, including acute care hospitals, Alzheimer units, home care, long-term care settings, educational facilities, community health centres and more.

Applications are currently being accepted for the Practical Nursing program at Vancouver Career College in Kelowna. For more information, call 1.877.607.7819 or fill out the form on the right.
