How to Become a Registered Massage Therapist in BC

Friday, September 14, 2012

There are quite a few steps involved in becoming a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT), but for those who have embraced this career path, it can be an exciting adventure every step of the way. From taking specialized courses to passing the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC) certification exam, the requirements will make any aspiring professional feel victorious once they have successfully completed them.

The first step to becoming an RMT is to find the right college that offers a strong program. Courses must follow the guidelines of the CMTBC Occupational Competency Profile. Within these regulations are stipulations on communication, professional conduct, relationships with patients and colleagues, an overall assessment of required skills and much more. It may sound overwhelming, but as long as students know to ask school officials or advisers whether or not their programs follow these guidelines, then they should be set for a bright massage therapy education and potential career.

Typically lasting about two years, these massage therapy programs train students on the best methods to help patients reach recovery and relaxation, as well as a variety of other wellness techniques. Learning the fundamentals of neurology, physiology, anatomy and other science fields, students may even feel like they could test their knowledge against other skilled experts in the medical field. They will also learn about massage theory and the various techniques that provide safe and beneficial support to patients, such as limb handling or massages where individuals lay on their sides. To reinforce the concepts taught in class, students will often perform certain techniques on each other to improve their skills and prepare them for when they have actual patients who need their assistance.

After completing their program, graduates will gear up for taking the CMTBC exam. With their proof of education, paid exam fees and letters of recommendation, these young adults will be ready to take on the test. First, applicants take a written exam, testing their knowledge of the field in areas including clinical science, jurisprudence and professional matters. The practical exam puts students in a real-life scenario where they must diagnose a mock patient and then assess and create a treatment plan for them. Seasoned professionals judge their overall performance and determine whether or not they are prepared to enter the field.

Those who are interested in embarking on this career path can take healthcare courses through the Registered Massage Therapy program at Vancouver Career College. To find out more information, fill out the form on the right.
