FCMO / Fundamentals of Computers
This course presents an introductory look at Windows 7 and its interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of navigating and personalizing the interface, organizing files and folders, using media devices, and searching for information. This course relies heavily on practical hands-on activities that allow you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.
SSS4 / Student Success Strategies

Students will gain a better understanding of themselves through an exploration of their personal attributes, transferable skills and learning styles. This course will introduce techniques for time, conflict, and stress management and develop interpersonal communication skills. Fundamental study and motivation skills will be covered, preparing students to excel in their program of choice. Students will also prepare a professional resume and learn how to write effective cover letters.

PRAC210 / Practicum
This program includes a practicum component which consists of work at a job site. The practicum work experience is a mandatory diploma requirement and the business organization does not pay for the services of the student during the practicum.
MW7E / Word Processing
This course will present the MS Word application interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of word processing, document, and paragraph and character formatting, working with templates, lists and tables. This course relies heavily on hands-on practical activities which allow you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.
B2000A / Hospitality Today
The student will gain the knowledge how the hospitality industry started and the able to evaluate the significance of the hospitality today .Training will include the importance of customer service, along with many soft skills aspects of the hospitality industry.
M5000 / Fundamentals of Health Information Management
This module provides students with the knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of health information in Canada and the management of health care information regardless of the medium and format. Although emphasis is on the Canadian system, comparisons with the US health care system are explored. Some of the topics covered in this module are; the Canadian health care system, various types of health information systems, the health record paper version, health information standards, collecting health care data, quality and uses of health information, confidentiality and compliance, statistics, etc. This course employs a variety of participatory instructional methods and activities; interactive lectures, small group work, discussion, practice simulation, group presentations. In-class activities will provide the student with the chance to apply the concepts and ideas to the topics taught.
B2010A / Housekeeping Management
Students will gain a comprehensive overview of all aspects of housekeeping management including quality maintenance, staffing, planning, and technical considerations.
B2020A / Front Office Management
Students will understand, organize, perform and evaluate front office functions that are critical to the success of a hotel. Students will be trained on the importance of guest service, along with the many technical aspects of front office management.
M5005 / Health Records Clerk
This module will prepare students for the role of a medical records/health information clerk. Students will gain skills in the areas of medical record assembly, medical record analysis, the physician incomplete area, processing certificates, case management clerk, cancer registry clerk, outpatient clinic clerk, optical imaging clerk, processing medical records and record retention. This course employs a variety of participatory instructional methods and activities; interactive lectures, small group work, discussion, practice simulation, group presentations. In-class activities will provide the student with the chance to apply the concepts and ideas to the topics taught.
B2030A / Hospitality Computer Systems
Students will become familiar with the specialized computer applications used in the hospitality industry, with emphasis on reservations systems, property management systems, and food and beverage sector systems.
ML1E / Medical Language I
Medicine, like other professions, has its own language. Students will learn to work with the specialized terminology of medicine, including the pronunciation and spelling of terms to describe medical circumstances and situations. Students will learn through descriptions, illustrations and exercises to identify the major anatomical features and systems of the body and the common pathologies, which can adversely affect these systems.
B2050A / Hospitality Supervision
Students will examine the role of the supervisor in lodging and food service operations, and will learn staff supervision skills techniques. Specific techniques for effective communication, increasing productivity and controlling labour costs are covered.
EHRE / Electronic Health Records
This module will teach students the basics of the EHR. This module will give the students an overview of what electronic health records are, how they came about and the forces that are driving toward the EHR. Some of the topics covered in this module are; the electronic medical records systems, the creation of an electronic medical record, how to manage the electronic medical record, security around the EHR, the electronic medical record and its components, etc. This module continues to build the student’s computer skills with additional methods to speed data entry. Additionally, students are introduced to computerized order entry. This course employs a variety of participatory instructional methods and activities; interactive lectures, small group work, discussion, practice simulation, group presentations. In-class activities will provide the student with the chance to apply the concepts and ideas to the topics taught.
B2060A / Basic Accounting for the Hospitality Industry
Students will be introduced to basic fundamental accounting issues and procedures required in hotels, restaurants and clubs. Students will learn the responsibility of a hospitality property’s accounting department, advantages and drawbacks of various types of income statements, and the role of inventory in calculating profit.
M5020 / Filing Systems
This module explores the different methods of data storage, including terminal digit filing, alphabetic filing, numeric filing, and batch filing. Students learn about colour coding, out guides, how to manage volumes and how to locate misfiles. They will also become familiar with filing equipment and archiving and storage systems.
B2070A / Food and Beverage Operations
Students will be introduced to all aspects of food and beverage operations and will examine the efficiency of planning, management and delivery of services by dining halls, coffee shops, caterers, clubs and room service operations.
M5030 / Processing Medical Records
This module provides students with a background into medical files and their handling. Students learn about the uses of medical records, how to enter records into tracking systems, the process of signing records in and out of management systems, and file maintenance.
B2080A / Hospitality Sales and Marketing
Students will be introduced to proven marketing strategies and examine how these strategies are successfully implemented in marketing the hospitality services of hotels, motels and resorts.
M5040 / Health Information Reporting
This module teaches students to compile, review, analyze and classify health related data. Students will have an opportunity to practice analyzing and reporting on data from the health sciences.
B2040A / Hotel/Motel Security Management
Students will be prepared to meet the vital issues facing today’s hospitality industry pertaining especially to security issues. Students will learn about proven strategies that protect both employees and guests.
B2110A / Human Resource Management
Students will learn the skills required by hospitality professionals in managing and retaining qualified employees. Some topics covered include: attracting and retaining productive employees, scheduling, training and job satisfaction, incorporating needs of people of different age groups and backgrounds, and handling labour relations and union issues.
M5070 / Transcription
This course will provide students with basic medical transcription skills necessary to understand verbal dictation and convert it to a text format. Using dictation equipment and transcription software, the student will transcribe medical reports from a variety of specialties. These reports will include chart notes, consultations, discharge summaries, history and physical reports, follow-up reports, medical letters, pathology reports and more. Students will learn a variety of medical terms while transcribing for various disciplines such as dermatology, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neurology, gastroenterology, urology, ophthalmology, pathology and more. Although emphasis is on dictation, typing skills and drills are included for the purpose of building speed and accuracy. The goal is for students to be able to maintain a speed of 50 wpm with less than 3 errors by end of course.
B2120A / Hospitality Facilities Management
Students will learn how to work effectively with facilities engineering and maintenance departments, including designing for food and beverage provisioning, telecommunications systems, and coordinating operations with renovation projects.
HSP199 / Practicum
This module is for course credits but has no grade. Students will be placed in actual work places related to their field of study and will be expected to act as a regular employee in order to gain the valuable real-world experience that so many employers seek. Students are encouraged to find their own work experience placement; however, once placed, continuation in that placement is mandatory.
CES4 / Career and Employment Strategies

This course builds on the skills learned in the Student Success Strategies course or its equivalent. It provides information on how to use the communication skills learned in order to make a successful presentation to a prospective employer. Students also learn how to uncover the hidden job market and identifyemployment opportunities. Self-assessment during this course allows students to identify their personal skills that are transferable to the work place and to describe these skills to a prospective employer. Students may be videotaped during a mock interview and will participate in the analysis of their performance in the “interview”.
