Becoming an RMT as a Parent in BC: A Realistic Two-Year Plan

Changing careers to become a registered massage therapist (RMT) with kids is less about handling anatomy and more about whether your family calendar can absorb two years of change. Child care, household income and any plans for another baby all have to line up with a full-time program and a licence exam that runs only twice a year.

This guide maps the journey at Vancouver Career College (VACC), from first class to BC licence, and shows where the timing gets tight.

How Long Does It Take to Become an RMT When You Have Kids?

Plan for about two years from your first class to a BC licence if your graduation lines up with an exam sitting, and closer to two and a half if it doesn't. The program takes 88 weeks (about 20 months), and CCHPBC releases licence exam results about eight weeks after the final component.

Here's how each stage affects family life:

Stage What happens What it means for your family
Before Term 1 Introduction to Massage Workshop, an interview (minimum score of 20 out of 30) and proof of English proficiency Book child care for the workshop and interview
Terms 1 and 2 Anatomy, palpation, massage theory and assessment basics Full weekday child care starts on day one
Terms 3 to 6 Pathology and treatment courses, plus supervised student clinic shifts Clinic rotations can differ from class hours, so line up backup care
Terms 7 and 8 Advanced clinic shifts, anatomy and physiology review, clinical synthesis Exam preparation starts alongside family routines
Licence exam The three parts of the CCHPBC licence exam: Performance-Based Assessment (PBA), Clinical Knowledge and Theory (CKT) exam and Law, Ethics and Professionalism (LEP) exam Budget $1,970 for a full exam attempt
Licence Results, then a $225 licence application You'll need $5 million in liability insurance and current first aid

Why Your Start Date Can Add Months Before Your Licence

Your start date decides which exam sitting you can reach after graduation, and that can stretch the wait between your last class and your results from about four months to nearly a year. CCHPBC holds the exam twice a year, and applications close weeks to months before each sitting.

For the Spring 2025 sitting, applications closed January 10 and exams ran from late February to mid-March. For the Fall 2026 sitting, applications closed June 26 and exams ran from September 14 to October 21.

If you finish the program Sitting you can target Results around Wait from graduation to results
Shortly before a January deadline Spring May About four to five months
Shortly before a June deadline Fall December About six to seven months
Just after either deadline The sitting after that May or December About 10 to 11 months

This is our analysis of those two schedules, and CCHPBC sets new dates for each sitting. In practice, ask admissions which start dates line up with the sitting you want, and budget for a stretch with no RMT income. The wait isn't idle: after applications close, CCHPBC enrols candidates in a seven-module LEP course, and every module quiz must be passed at 100% before the LEP exam.

What Does a Full-Time RMT School Week Look Like With Kids?

Full-time RMT school is a full workday: at VACC, classes are usually scheduled Monday to Friday in 6.5-hour sessions, and later terms add supervised clinic shifts of four to five hours. Your campus confirms exact class hours when you enrol.

Vancouver Career College offers the program at its Burnaby and Abbotsford campuses, so factor in your commute. Here's what to arrange:

  • Full-day care: 6.5-hour sessions plus travel usually mean full-day care, or before- and after-school care for older kids.
  • Clinic shifts: from Term 4, one or two shifts a week in the student clinic or outreach settings, building toward 600 clinic hours, including at least 330 hands-on hours with the public.
  • Schedule changes: clinic rotations, guest speakers and field trips can fall outside usual class times, with notice, so keep a backup caregiver.
  • Study time: every course requires a minimum mark of 70%, so protect weekly study time the way you'd protect a shift.

How Can Parents Fund RMT School in BC?

Parents studying full-time can be assessed for the Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students with Dependants: up to $280 a month for each child under 12, through the 2026 to 2027 school year. A family with two children under 12 could be assessed for up to $560 a month. Both VACC campuses are on StudentAid BC's designated schools list, so students can apply for federal and provincial student aid.

Support What it offers Good to know
Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students with Dependants Up to $280 a month per child under 12 while you study Phases out with family income; a family of four reaches the cut-off at $129,769
StudentAid BC child care costs Your assessment can count up to $1,153 a month per child aged 11 and under (2026 to 2027) Include real child care costs when you apply
Affordable Child Care Benefit Monthly help with child care fees Attending school is a qualifying reason; in two-parent families, both parents need one. Families earning up to about $111,000 may qualify
Vancouver Career College Scholarships for eligible students, student loans and other RMT program financial options Ask about these early

Planning Parental Leave Once You're Licensed

Self-employed RMTs can opt in to EI special benefits for maternity and parental leave, but the agreement must be active for 12 months before you can receive benefits, so register as soon as you start working for yourself.

You also need minimum net self-employed earnings in the previous calendar year: $9,254 for 2025, updated annually.

  • Example: licensed and registered in May, your earliest benefits would start the following May, and only if your first calendar year's net earnings meet that year's minimum.
  • Before school: if you're still employed, weigh having a baby before you start, while you may still qualify through your current job.
  • Child care: the Affordable Child Care Benefit doesn't count maternity or parental leave as a qualifying reason, so funded care starts when school does.

What Do RMTs Earn in BC?

Job Bank lists a BC median of $43,600 a year for massage therapists (NOC 32201), and $46,400 in Lower Mainland Southwest, the region that includes Burnaby and Abbotsford (updated November 19, 2025, using 2021 Census data). Job Bank rates job prospects in BC as Moderate.

Medians include experienced therapists, so budget your first year conservatively. Our breakdown of clinic splits, rent and take-home pay shows what each arrangement leaves you.

Family Readiness Checklist

Before you apply, aim to say yes to these:

  • Weekday child care covers 6.5-hour class days plus your commute
  • A backup caregiver can cover clinic shifts and schedule changes
  • Admissions has told you which start dates line up with a spring or fall sitting
  • Your StudentAid BC application includes your child care costs
  • Savings or a partner's income can carry the household from graduation to licence
  • You've booked a treatment at a VACC student clinic to see the training up close

Putting Your Two-Year Plan in Motion

Becoming an RMT as a parent is a two-year project with a few fixed points: an 88-week program, two exam sittings a year and a 12-month EI wait if more children are in your plans. Line those up with child care and funding before your first class.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Too Late to Become an RMT in Your 30s or 40s?

No. VACC's RMT admission requirements set no upper age limit, and mature-student admission starts at 19. For career changers, the bigger planning questions are child care, finances and physical stamina.

Can You Work While in RMT School?

It's possible, but the schedule is tight: classes run weekdays in 6.5-hour sessions, with clinic shifts and study on top. If you need income, test evening or weekend hours during Terms 1 and 2.

Can You Study to Be an RMT Part-Time or Online in BC?

Not at VACC: the program is full-time and in person over 88 weeks. BC-educated applicants need a recognized program accredited by CCHPBC or the Canadian Massage Therapy Council for Accreditation (CMTCA), so check accreditation first.
